Clay Woodpecker Sculpture | 12 Clays of Christmas - Day 12

Welcome back to the 12 Clays of Christmas! Today, on day 12 - our final day - I’m sculpting a winter woodpecker perched on a woodland log. This is the largest ornament of the series, roughly tennis ball sized, and such a lovely piece to end the collection with. I start by rolling a piece of clay for the tree trunk and adding natural bark texture. Then I shape the body and head using my fingers, before forming and attaching the wings, tail and legs. I refine the toes one by one, adjust the shape of the body and add feather details with a needle tool. More texture goes into the wood to make everything feel rustic and realistic. Once the sculpture is dry, I begin with a black paint wash over the whole piece. The log is painted in warm brown and soft green, while the woodpecker gets carefully patterned black and white markings. A bright red patch under the tail brings it to life, followed by soft highlights and a final cool grey blue wash to tie everything together. Inside the acrylic bauble, the log is pressed into the clay at a slight angle, surrounded by moss and winter sparkle.
