Since taking office, U.S. President Donald Trump has declared illegal immigration a national emergency. The Trump administration has ramped up its mass deportation efforts, expanding the use of expedited removal and using Guantanamo Bay as a detention site for certain migrants. The moves have raised concerns among immigration advocates, who argue that the policies lack transparency and could violate due process rights. There are two primary ways someone can be deported, Hannah Flamm, interim senior director of policy at the International Refugee Assistance Project (IRAP), told VOA in an interview. One is the standard process. “When you enter the United States, or at some point after you are living in the United States, you are issued a charging document which begins a proceeding against you. … [During this process] you can apply for asylum or otherwise defend your right to be in the United States. … If you don't win at the end of that process, then you are issued a deportation order,” Flamm said.
