You’ll be working alongside a capable owner-operator couple who love feeding their cows, thrive on producing milk and take pride in doing the fundamentals well. They’re looking for a trusted right-hand, an open communicator who’s calm, non-confrontational, asks good questions and has the initiative to crack on and get things done. About the farm Located in Ohaupo, just 10 minutes from Hamilton and 20 minutes to Te Awamutu and Cambridge, this farm offers the best of both worlds: rural lifestyle with easy access to town. This is a high-performing ~180 Cow Jersey-Cross herd, ranked in the top 5% nationally, run with strong standards and genuine pride in animal performance. The property is also home to beautiful QEII Trust covenants, reflecting a farm that values care for the land and long-term stewardship, not just short-term results. The role entails: This Herd Manager/2IC position has plenty of hands-on work and real ownership. You’ll be trusted to lead day-to-day standards and step up when the owners are away. You will: • Run the cowshed and own this space — consistent routines, shed hygiene, quality standards, calm flow and pride in a job done well. • Support and build capability in pasture management — grazing plans, rotations, residuals and protecting pasture through the seasons. • Drive cow performance and animal health — feeding, observation, treatments and maintaining condition. • Take a practical lead on maintenance and machinery — keeping gear and infrastructure running, working safely and efficiently. • Run the farm in the owners’ absence — making sensible calls, keeping momentum and communicating clearly. What you’ll bring • Stock-first mindset: empathy and passion for cows, strong animal health focus and pride in condition and wellbeing. • Clear, calm communication: non-confrontational, asks questions early, builds trust and contributes positively to the team dynamic. • Practical ownership: reliable, hands-on, maintenance and machinery savvy and proactive about spotting issues and fixing them properly. • Performance focus: enjoys lifting outcomes — pasture use, milk quality, consistency and tidy execution day to day.
