Despite my injuries, I stayed around to learn about Technical Rescue. Unfortunately, I couldn't stick around for the whole training session and had to leave early. The first part of the video shows recruits being trained on how to secure a patient in a Stokes basket using lumbar support. The scenario involved rescuing a man who was lying on the roof of a structure with no other way to bring him down but through the use of a Stokes basket. The second part of the video shows how they attempted to do a diamond lash using a particular technique that starts with wrapping the ankles. However, the webbing used wasn't long enough, and they couldn't secure the victim in the Stokes basket. Instructor Steve Huey then tried a different technique where the ankles weren't wrapped, which allowed them to save enough webbing to complete the diamond lash. They raised the bottom to demonstrate that the victim was secure, despite a minor issue with one of the rings not being tight enough. The recruits also learned how to use a Stokes basket with a diamond lash to carry a patient down a steep slope using ropes and carabiners. This technique is useful for rescues that require carrying a patient across rough terrain. In summary, this video showcases the Virginia Beach Fire Academy's training on how to package an unconscious victim in a Stokes basket using a diamond lash. This essential skill is taught in the Introduction to Technical Rescue course and is crucial for firefighters in rescue scenarios.
