Celebrated chef Adjo Honsou moved from Togo, West Africa to St. Louis at the age of 14 and brought with her a passion for food and cooking. Last year she won The Great American Recipe cooking competition, and she is getting national attention as people are discovering this wonderful cuisine in the hands of a culinary maven. Chef Adjo's grandmother taught Adjo cooking when she lived in Togo, and when she came to the US she struggled, like so many people, with feeling different and not being accepted, but she found that through food she can help bring people together, and building understanding and community through her cooking and teaching kids (and adults) about Togolese cuisine is, for her, one of the most important things she does. Finding ingredients like egusi in St. Louis was not easy, but through perserverence she found ways to source authentic ingredients and to bring her favorite dishes to her new city. She also sells her curry spice blend on line for people who want to get a little taste of South African cuisine in their own home.
