Ethers | Essential Oil Chemistry

In essential oil chemistry, essential oils high in ethers are typically avoided and rarely used in aromatherapy due to toxicity concerns. Ethers tend to have strong notes such as Anise with its licorice-like aroma. But, we do find some essential oils contain benefits that can be useful at a low dilution rate. Ethers do not occur in essential oils as simply ethers. Many ethers in essential oils are phenolic, derived from the hydroxyl group of the phenol. This occurs when a hydrogen from the hydroxyl group breaks off and is replaced with a short hydrocarbon chain (usually a methyl group such as –CH3). Because of the stability of the benzene ring and the methyl group (-CH3), they are considered effective in reducing pain and muscle spasms. Phenolic ethers are notarized as being strong in odor and strong in action.
