I wrote this last year, shortly after my daughter (second kid) turned 1. The video was taken on a whim in the backyard, while both kids were playing in the tree fort. They leant me their Barbie and tiny, plastic desk (very fitting) for the occasion. "Plastic Food" There’s plastic food across the lawn dotted amongst the wildflowers A foreshadow of the day to come I’ve become my mother in the least obvious ways In almost every way From this ground-level perch I watch the earth lurch and mumble Neighbors I’ve never met, walking their dogs Or dogs walking them? Hard to say I am the happiest And I’m the most adrift Tags still on our nursery plants Softly waving in the wind Already stuck them in the ground and packed their roots with soil Who am I kidding? There’s no going back anymore Slinking up the drive A streak of black The neighborhood cat He looks like ours but half his face is gone He’s been through things I wonder what he thinks of me in my quiet luxury I fight the urge to tell him how I birthed a son and all that comes in the aftermath to brains and bodies and losing touch with not just friends but everything all at once How I love who he’s become And how I also birthed a daughter and every daughter who comes after I joke that one day, they will both hate me (and need therapy) Anyway, that’s the last five years or so There’s no going back anymore All our grass looks thirsty As far as I can see we're the only ones here looking like that Guess it’s lying dormant I’ve never felt closer to my front yard Just resting before the thaw There’s probably someone looking on who dreams of this land I’m on I'll never look back Well, there’s no going back anymore There’s plastic food across the lawn dotted amongst the wildflowers
