After its world premiere at Birmingham Rep, THE WAY OLD FRIENDS DO has transferred to London's Park Theatre ahead of a UK tour. The new ABBA-inspired comedy is written by Ian Hallard (who also stars) and directed by his husband Mark Gatiss (Sherlock, Dracula, Doctor Who, The League of Gentlemen). The two previously appeared onstage together at the Park in the 2016 revival of Mart Crowley's The Boys in the Band. THE WAY OLD FRIENDS DO centres on two school friends from Birmingham who, in the 1980s, tentatively came out to one another: one as gay, the other as an ABBA fan. Nearly thirty years later, a chance meeting sets them on an exciting new path, and they decide to form the world’s first ABBA tribute band – in drag. But can their friendship survive the tribulations of life on the road; one full of platform boots, fake beards and a distractingly attractive stranger? Tender and laugh-out-loud funny in equal measures, this heartfelt story will appeal to anyone who understands how it feels to be a fan: of ABBA or of anyone. Following the 7.30pm performance of THE WAY OLD FRIENDS DO on Wednesday 29 March 2023, Terri Paddock chaired a post-show talk with (from l-r) cast members Sara Crowe, Rose Shalloo, Donna Berlin, writer and actor Ian Hallard, director Mark Gatiss, and cast members James Bradshaw and Andrew Horton. With a special appearance by Bob, Ian and Mark's Labrador. The performance was dedicated to the comedian and drag legend Paul O'Grady, whose death was announced earlier that day. O'Grady specially recorded two lengthy radio voiceovers for the show. THE WAY OLD FRIENDS DO continues at the Park Theatre until 15 April 2023 and then continues on tour until 10 June.
