We move through places every day, responding to them almost automatically… yet we rarely stop to consider why they matter. This talk invites you to explore: How geographers understand the concept of “place” How place is created and experienced inside social virtual worlds How virtual places can open new possibilities for teaching and learning Whether you’re an educator, a designer, a student, or simply curious about how virtual environments influence human experience, this session will offer fresh insights into the evolving meaning of where we are. Presenter: Meryl McBride/Merrill Johnson, Ph.D. Meryl is a recently Retired Professor of Geography at Colorado State University-Fort Collins. Before CSU, she was a Professor of Geography at the University of New Orleans. Most of her time was spent in academic administration, including department chair, associate dean, acting dean, associate provost/vice president of academic affairs, and a number of acting and interim leadership positions. Finally, she was PI for a Louisiana Second Life project involving a consortium of Louisiana universities. This project was funded through competitive grants. She is a political and economic geographer by training, and have published work in a variety of peer-reviewed journals. She recently published a book on a geographer’s guide to social virtual worlds.
