River Towy

The River Towy is the longest river flowing entirely in Wales and has a length of 75 miles. From its source in the Cambrian Mountains, the Towy is first interrupted by the Lynne Brianne reservoir about 6 miles south of its source, but then flows through the beautiful Towy Forest. Llyn Brianne Reservoir was built in the late 60s /early 70s in order to regulate the flow of water in the River Towy. In 1996 the Dam was raised by 1 meter and a hydro electric generating station was added at the base of the dam. When the Reservoir is full water spills over and runs down the spillway and is quite spectacular. Under the reservoir there are a couple of houses, which were flooded to make way for the water reservoir. Before the water level was raised, it was possible to walk to Fannog farmhouse as a "For Sale" sign was once erected on it. It is still possible, when the water is very low to walk into this farmhouse, although it is many years since I have done this!
