SS guards lingered in watchtowers, some surrendering, others defiant. Chaos blurred the line between captors and captives. In that moment, the Americans faced impossible questions: Were the guards still enemies—or prisoners of war? Who gave the order to fire? And why were these actions never prosecuted as war crimes?
