With that said, he said it should be perceived differently from other races of darker complexions, including when it’s said by Asians who were never involved in the oppression of blacks historically. Nonetheless, he believes the popularity of the word has taken on a life of its own, which he mainly attributes to the gatekeepers of hip-hop who allowed the word to crossover into the mainstream.
