This is a video of Elly Kelly playing with Jo-El Sonnier, at his home in Louisiana in October 2013. At the time, Elly had been diagnosed with terminal cancer. Shortly after receiving that news, Elly said she wanted to go to Louisiana and that she wanted to meet Jo-El Sonnier, her idol accordion player. Elly's family contacted Jo-El Sonnier and he and his wife Bobbye arranged a special meeting for them. The family asked to maybe meet at a coffee shop, but Jo-El and Bobbye had something else in mind. Jo-El and Bobbye booked a big time resort hotel room for us, took us out fishing on the gulf and then brought us back to their home for a crab boil and a red fish feast. Jo-El and Elly played some tunes together. This was incredible. I was there witnessing this, recording moments and taking photos. I knew how special it was and I knew what it would mean to us in the future. Elly was from New Brunswick and was of Acadian decent. Jo-El is also of Acadian decent, in Louisina. This was a beautiful moment to witness and will never be forgotten. So, here it is for you on youtube. Jo-El also brought out a tape recorder to capture the moments and later transferred the audio to disc for Elly. The first song is the Waltz of the Angels and Elly and Jo-El eventually get into a nice harmony on that. Beautiful. The second song that is playing in the background is Jolie Blonde - a tune Elly was looking forward to playing with Jo-El. Jo-El issued a special Facebook post about Elly when I informed him of her passing. We are forever grateful to have these special friends in Louisiana. Thank you Jo-El and Bobbye. Elly Kelly passed away on May 24, 2014. Breast cancer. This video was shown at her life celebration on May 28, 2014 and then again at the accordion festival in Moncton, July 5, 2014. Her performance chair and board have been donated to the Acadian Museum in Moncton, NB - delivered there on July 6, 2014. Please continue to enjoy and share her music.
