Pakistan face the Netherlands in the curtain-raiser from Group A at the Sinhalese Sports Club, setting the tone for a tournament that will feature 20 teams competing across India and Sri Lanka for ultimate glory. Pakistan endured a torrid campaign in the previous edition, a disappointment that triggered a rethink in both personnel and approach. They were knocked out in the first round after defeats to India and the USA, though they did manage wins over Canada and Ireland. The changes since then have been significant. Babar Azam is no longer the captain, while Mohammad Rizwan does not feature in the squad. Salman Ali Agha has taken over the leadership, promoted himself to number three, and embraced an ultra-aggressive batting approach. That shift paid immediate dividends as the Men in Green whitewashed Australia just days before the World Cup. Babar Azam has found a new role in the side, he is shifted to the middle order. Sahibzada Farhan has had a lean patch in the recent past but the management has trusted him to deliver the goods in Sri Lanka. Shaheen Shah Afridi will lead the pace attack, supported by Salman Mirza and Naseem Shah. Shadab Khan and Mohammad Nawaz provide the spin-bowling all-round options, while Faheem Ashraf slots in as the seam-bowling all-rounder. On the other hand, Scott Edwards will lead the Netherlands. Logan van Beek, Colin Ackermann and Bas de Leede are the all-rounders who have helped the Dutch be a force among the associate nations.
