In the heart of Ogoja, Cross River State, Ms. Chansa Kapaya, the UNHCR Representative in Nigeria, sheds light on the remarkable generosity and hospitality of the nation. Despite facing its challenges with internal displacement, Nigeria stands in solidarity with over 99,000 refugees and asylum seekers from 41 countries, primarily from neighbouring Cameroon. By embracing the Global Compact on Refugees, Nigeria has enabled these forcibly displaced individuals to integrate and find new opportunities. However, the challenges persist. With growing refugee populations, local social services like education, WASH, and health are under pressure. While the Nigerian government and UNHCR work tirelessly, resources are still stretched thin. Humanitarian and Development Partners alike are thus called upon to do more to support refugee-hosting states.
