As someone who’d used Bluetooth earphones before, I was amazed at the how seamless the AirPods worked. No holding down a button to connect and disconnect with a strange connection sound playing. It felt like the future. I remember early reviews panning the original AirPods for lackluster sound quality and a goofy aesthetic. Some even claimed they sounded “exactly like the Apple EarPods that were still very popular at the time”. This just wasn’t true in my experience, and I made a series of videos of my own at the time praising these earphones. Fast forward nearly a decade later, and AirPods are everywhere. People love them, and wear them seemingly everywhere (at least here in the US). With multiple generations of both the standards and pro versions now available to choose from, there are seemingly AirPods for everyone. The AirPods Pro 3 have only been out for a few weeks, and on the surface seem very similar to the second generation buds. I’ve been using and testing them, and want to share my thoughts as an avid user of the AirPods Pro 2 and longtime AirPods fan. To cut the right to the chase, I want to try to answer the question of whether or not the AirPods Pro 3 are a worthy upgrade from the Pro 2s. Afterall, the 2s have been out for 3 years now and many of us (myself included) have been eagerly awaiting the next generation. While it wasn’t perhaps as true back when I made my first AirPods videos in 2017, my understanding and appreciation for high end audio has become fairly developed, even perhaps to the point of justifying the term “audiophile”. I’ve used and owned a number of high end open back headphones often costing over five hundred dollars, and own a DAC/AMP combo that cost me around $400. I exclusively stream lossless audio. With all that said, I pretty rarely use my Sennheiser HD 660 S paired with JDS Labs Element II these days due to it being relatively inconvenient for me. All that’s to say that I have a lot of experience with high end headphones, and that inevitably affects my outlook on the AirPods Pro 3. The sound quality of the Pro 2s was always pretty good in my opinion. It wasn’t anything like the high end equipment I’ve used, but I could never really expect it to be. I hoped however that these the Pro 3s would sound better at least, and I’m happy to report that they do. I’ve heard other reviewers describe the sound profile as more bass heavy, and while I notice a more prominent bass, it's by no means overpowering and something I find quite pleasant. I think most people will feel the same. Compared to the Pro 2s, I notice better imagining, that’s to say that I feel like I can notice more “space” within songs. I also tend to notice vocals some across a bit clearer. Overall, I really do like the sound of these better than the Pro 2s and doing back to back testing of both pairs solidified this impression. I think much of this is due to the new design in which the ear tips form a much better seal in your ears and seem to also go “deeper” into your ears. The fit is quite different, and at first I thought it was more uncomfortable though I eventually got used to it. I was one of those people for whom the Pro 2s would sometimes fall out, but with these, I think that’s much less likely to happen. On top of this, the noise cancelling that I already considered quite good on the last generation is even better here. They get noticeably quieter, making listening to music feel even more immersive. I haven’t had the chance to take these on a flight yet, but did a few times with the Pro 2s and original Pros before them. I remember noticing a big difference between the first and second generation in terms of their ability to block out engine noise on a plane and am sure that these would be even better for that. I remember thinking that even with the Pro 2s I wish that they were just a little better at blocking out engine noise, and I think that this new generation seems to improve this.
