SAAO Weekly Colloquium 06 March 2025 by Prof Yin-Zhe Ma

Title: Search the “Missing baryons” in the cosmic web – Preparing for LSST Era Abstract: Previous studies of galaxy formation have indicated that only about 10% of the cosmic baryons are accounted for within stars and galaxies, with the remaining 90% appearing to be missing. In this presentation, I will discuss several observational investigations that provide compelling evidence for the existence of these missing baryons. These studies involve various cross-correlations, including the thermal Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect with gravitational lensing, as well as correlations with pairs of luminous red galaxies and cosmic voids identified in the SDSS. I will examine how these studies collectively contribute to our understanding of the physical properties of the warm-hot intergalactic medium within the cosmic web, and explore the future prospects for this area of research.
