Stronghold was an officially licensed Dungeons & Dragons video game developed by Stormfront Studios, and published by Strategic Simulations Inc. (SSI) in 1993. Stormfront studios was responsible for the Savage Frontier SSI games up to this point, as well as the first MMORPG to display graphics online, SSI's Neverwinter Nights (March 1991, not to be confused with later titles of the same name), so they were well-versed in working with D&D and AD&D. They were the perfect choice to pull off this game, which is why it has become a cult classic among CRPG/Strategy fans. Certainly, what they pulled off using only 13 mb of disk space is incredible. This game was also available on the FM Towns and PC-98. Stronghold was a change of pace for SSI, bringing D&D fantasy into an RTS (almost 4X) world. Labeled as a Kingdom Simulator, you split your time between resource management, city building, and commanding your forces. Your goal is to become Emperor by building a great kingdom (Lawful victory), through conquering AI-controlled enemies by force (Chatoic victory), or as a sort of hard mode, win by achieving both conditions (Neutral victory). The world map is rendered in isometric 2.5D and features different terrain types and topography. You can choose between the developer created worlds, or generate a random scenario for added replayability. Each settlement has its own unique style and buildings, over 100 structure, and your leaders are chosen from the original Dungeons and Dragons characters: Fighter, Mage, Thief, Cleric, Dwarf, Elf, and Halfling. Train your leaders to govern over your neighborhoods, attract like-minded followers, defend them from attack, or lead armies to attack a multitude of monster-owned settlements. You also get to bring along a party of 4 other retired adventurers to help you rule your kingdom. The gameplay and charming graphics hold up fairly well in the modern era. I think if the concept intrigues you, it won't be hard to have a good time with this game. You can purchase this title on GOG.com, where it has a rating of 4.3/5 stars, for $5.99 (which is a bit steep) as of release date of this video. If you liked Stronghold, you might also appreciate the later Majesty series.
