CINCINNATI (Larry Davis) - The Cincinnati riverfront could get yet another new look. The owners of US Bank Arena revealed plans Tuesday, July 28, to renovate the aging facility. The new look was quite different. When it was built 40 years ago, then riverfront coliseum was a much-needed addition to the riverfront which included Riverfront Stadium. That was about it. Now, people have Great American Ball Park, Paul Brown Stadium, The Banks, parks and now the new-look arena will complement the riverfront. US Bank Arena will never look the same from the outside, to the inside. The rendering showed the old, solid-wall arena transformed into an ultramodern facility. What stood out was the glass exterior. Michael Schuster is the architect for the project. He said the new design allowed multiple entry points and a concourse that will connect the plaza level to the riverfront and The Banks. Over the years, US Bank Arena played host to the Cyclones, crosstown shootouts, the circus and concerts by big-name acts like Elton John, Tina Turner and Rod Stewart. But the venue was showing its years. The lack of suites and other amenities contributed to Cincinnati losing the 2016 Republican national convention. Owners said that was when changes had to be made Ray Harris with Nederlander Entertainment said the new arena could meet the needs of a political convention, and attract other major events like the NCAA basketball tournament. But once inside, fans will be tempted to walk around the arena and look through the glass at a booming riverfront. Local 12 News asked Ray Harris with Nederlander whether the new-look arena could attract the NBA or NHL. He said he didn't want to get ahead of himself. But he did say he wouldn't mind hearing from UC about possibly playing games there. The new arena will expand to seat 18,500 including as many as 1,750 club seats. The owners will be sitting down with city, county and port authority leaders to talk about how to pay for the project. Local 12 News was told that may include some type of private public funding agreement. There was no date set for when construction will begin. It's expected to take about a year to complete.
