Civilization VII launched incomplete. This video is a snapshot in time — a Year Zero retrospective of Civ VII’s first year, its missteps, its potential, and where it might go next. One year after launch, Civilization VII remains one of the most ambitious — and controversial — entries in the franchise. This essay is a retrospective analysis intended to document the state of the game during its first year, before its long-term course corrections fully arrive. I explore the effects of Civ VII launching too early, especially in how this madeits biggest design departures (ages, detaching leaders and civ, civ switching) feel althemore agregious to many players, and why the game still shows clear signs of long-term potential — especially in light of the recently announced Test of Time update. This video was written and produced across January–February 2026 and reflects the state of Civilization VII before major, recently-announced spring updates. Where relevant, I reference announced changes to contextualize what Year Zero represents: a baseline, not a final verdict. This is not a hit piece — it’s an autopsy made out of care for one of the greatest strategy franchises ever made. I’ve spent over 700 hours across the Civilization franchise, primarily in deity single-player, and I approach this analysis both as a longtime Civ player and as a 3D Arts & Video Game Design graduate with hands-on experience in production pipelines.
