Hi students, friends, & family! Here is Chapter 12 of Everfound by Neal Shusterman with permission from Simon & Schuster. I'm going to give a content warning here for police violence. And that's what my main discussion question will center on as well. Clarence is just being himself and standing up for his dignity and rights, but finds himself in a dangerous interaction with the police. Even though he doesn't do anything wrong and is a good person, the police officers harass him and shoot him and he has to go to the hospital. So my question is, do you have a plan for how to engage with law enforcement in ways that keep you and everyone else involved as safe as possible? Have you talked to your parents, teachers, and other adults you trust about how to prioritize your safety while engaging with police officers, ICE agents, and anyone else with weapons, authority, and the power to seriously hurt you? How do you feel about this? If you've never had this conversation with anyone before and don't have a solid plan, perhaps sharing this chapter with an adult you TRUST--a parent, teacher, librarian, paraprofessional, neighbor, school security agent, etc. would be a good way to get this conversation started.
