Day 5: the “it’s gonna be a lot of asphalt and climbing” ride. Spoiler: it was. 😅 With Giro d’Italia 2025 creeping closer to Albania, we started with a very serious mission: a technical inspection of the country’s newest (and longest) tunnel. Officially? No bikes allowed. Unofficially? After a quick chat with the tunnel crew we received a totally-not-certified, wink-wink permission to roll through. 🚦🤫 So we sent it into over 2 km of darkness — cruising in at a polite 20 km/h… and exiting at whatever top speed our “horses” could cough up. 🐎💨 Then came the proper suffering: a long asphalt grind to the pass. Finally we touched something that feels like home — dirt and rocks — heading up Maja Thanasis. And because we were already allergic to asphalt, someone inevitably said the magic words: “I’ve got a shortcut.” 😈 Turns out the shortcut existed… on the map. In reality it was a spicy singletrack through Llogara National Park, technical, gorgeous… and featuring a brand-new discipline: downhill bike-pushing. Yep. Pushing. Downhill.
