(22 May 2019) India's Election Commission has rejected opposition fears of possible tampering of electronic voting machines ahead of Thursday's vote-counting to determine the outcome of the country's mammoth national elections. Authorities on Wednesday tightened security at counting centres where the electronic voting machines have been kept in strong rooms across the country. Vote counting begins at 8 a.m. local time on Thursday (0230 GMT), and most results are expected to be known by the end of the day. Nearly 900 million people were eligible to vote in these elections at more than a million polling stations across India. The Congress and other opposition parties have been stunned by exit poll projections by mainstream television channels predicting a massive victory for Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party and its allies. They alleged that an attempt was being made to tamper with the verdict in favour of the BJP by replacing the electronic voting machines in some areas. The Election Commission rejected the allegations in a statement Tuesday. Preparations were under way at the BJP headquarters in New Delhi, with makeshift canopies being raised to accommodate thousands of supporters expected to gather on Thursday. Provisional figures released by the Election Commission show that more than 67% voters cast their votes over the seven-phase election, the highest ever turnout recorded in any parliamentary polls in India.
