On September 26, 1889, the greatest steelmaker in American history walked into a blast furnace to fix a problem. He never walked out. Captain Bill Jones had built Carnegie's empire, pioneered the 8-hour workday, and earned the same salary as the President. Two days after his death, Carnegie's lawyer convinced his widow to sign over 50 patents for $35,000. Those patents made Carnegie millions. One in five men who died in Pittsburgh died inside a steel mill. Workers endured 12-hour shifts in 2,800°F heat wearing nothing but wool. No face shields. No gloves. No compensation if they didn't come home. They built the Brooklyn Bridge, the Empire State Building, and every railroad in America — from inside the furnace. And for a very long time, nobody kept count of what it cost them. #pittsburghsteel #carnegie #steelworkers #homestead #industrialrevolution #historydocumentary #steelmills #captainbilljones #workersrights #traditionalcrafts
