Vagharshapat, also known as Etchmiadzin, is a historic city in Armenia, located about 20 kilometers west of the capital, Yerevan. It is one of the oldest cities in Armenia and holds immense cultural and religious significance. The city is often referred to as the "Holy See of the Armenian Apostolic Church," as it is home to the Etchmiadzin Cathedral, the mother church of the Armenian Apostolic Church. Vagharshapat was founded in the early centuries of the Christian era and served as the capital of Armenia for several centuries. It became especially important after King Tiridates III converted to Christianity in the early 4th century, making Armenia the first nation to adopt Christianity as its state religion in 301 AD. The Etchmiadzin Cathedral, built in 301-303 AD, is considered the oldest cathedral in the world that is still in use. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2000.The cathedral is located in the heart of Vagharshapat.
