A stage performance of "Luo Yuan"《落院》, a piece from the tradition of Henan bantou qu (河南板头曲), also called Zhongzhou gu diao (中州古调, literally "ancient tunes from the Central Plains"), a genre of traditional music from Nanyang (南阳市), southwestern Henan province (河南省), central China that is generally played by traditional Chinese string instruments, either solo or in ensemble. Bantou qu music, which is based on the traditional qupai (曲牌, labeled tune) known as "Ba Ban"《八板》, is typically used as introduction or interlude music in narrative singing from Henan province such as Nanyang da diao quzi (南阳大调曲子). Nanyang borders Xinyang to the southeast, Zhumadian to the east, Pingdingshan to the northeast, Luoyang to the north, Sanmenxia to the northwest, the province of Shaanxi (陕西) to the west, and the province of Hubei to the south.
