The USDA definition of a farm is 'Anyplace that could or normally would produce $1000 worth of agricultural products'. For years, I've been preaching about the fact that anyplace can be a farm and anybody can be a farmer. You don't need a bunch of land to start a farm. You don't need to borrow money to start a farm. And you aren't going to find any grant money laying around to start a farm. So, you might as well just get started from where you are with what you have. No one is going to help you start. Figure out what agricultural products you can propagate from your current living environment and start there. I reached out to the USDA to get a hard and fast definition of what an agricultural product is. And the result was basically anything derived from agriculture. Feel free to do your own research to determine whether or not something is an agricultural product or not. However, common sense will tell you that if it grows out of the ground, or comes from an animal then it is likely to be an agricultural product. Microgreens, plant cuttings, seedlings, seeds, soap, macrame, tinctures are all examples of agricultural products that could get your farm started. One thing that I forgot to mention in the 'admin' conversation in this video is insurance. Be sure to have an insurance policy that covers you if you have people coming on and off your farm. Let your insurance agent know what you are going to be engaging in and get the best policy for your budget. Hope this video helps you stop procrastinating and get started. ~Monica
