Fastvold discovered Ann Lee and the "Shaking Quakers" while she was researching her film 'The World to Come,' resulting in a years-long journey to tell the story of Ann Lee and her religious movement. Enlisting Amanda Seyfried to star as Ann Lee, Fastvold recalled how she utilized the inherent movement associated with the Shaker movement to inject musical numbers into the historical drama.
