Huang Ruo - Dust in Time Recorded at Grace Cathedral, San Francisco, CA 10/29/2020 Performed by the Del Sol String Quartet delsolquartet.com huangruo.com A DUST IN TIME《時間的塵埃》(Passacaglia for Strings) Program Notes: No matter who you are and where you are, we are all affected by this apparently endless pandemic. Most of us have experienced moments during this global crisis where time and space seem to be slowed or frozen. For some of us, memories, feelings, and lives are forever trapped in that slowly frozen time and space. This ongoing crisis has affected our current life and maybe even our life in the future. This special piece is created for the people affected by the pandemic, giving them a piece of music to reflect, to express, to mourn, to bury, to heal, to find internal peace, strength, and hope. A Dust in Time is a passacaglia written for Strings, and can be performed by string quartet, string ensemble, or string orchestra. It has three versions in duration: The full version of 60 minutes, the shorter version of 32 minutes, and the longer version of 120 minutes. 1) The full version: The original 60 minutes version, timed symbolizing the cycle and circle of the hour, is to be performed live without a break. Its structure is like a Tibetan sand mandala, created live slowly from the central essence point expanding outward into its colored fullness, and then to be subtracted from it inwards back to the central essence point, fulfilling the spiritual and life cycle and journey of traveling from nothing (emptiness) to something (fullness), and then back to nothing (emptiness). A colorful perfect world created by sands, although beautiful, yet it will eventually return back to dust. By going through this entire journey, what will remain afterwards is the fulfillment and internal peace laying in the heart ... 2) The short version: The shorter version is 32 minutes in duration, unfolding a process and journey from darkness to light, from frozenness and motionlessness to full of life and energy. 3) The long version: The original 60 minutes version can also be looped seamlessly for several hours, symbolizing eternity and infinite space/time. It can be performed live or pre-recorded by strings as a concert or as an installation at a specific site for visitors to freely come to stay and then leave whenever they feel.
