Locals raise concerns over dam construction in India's Arunachal Pradesh | BBC News India

China is building the world’s largest hydropower dam on the Yarlung Tsangpo river in Tibet. It is a $167 billion project and nearly three times the size of China’s Three Gorges Dam, which is currently the world’s largest hydro power dam. In response, India plans a massive dam on the same river, which flows first as the Siang in Arunachal Pradesh, later as the Brahmaputra in Assam, and finally as the Jamuna in Bangladesh. While both governments cite energy needs and strategic concerns, the projects have sparked deep anxiety across the region. Experts warn of seismic risks and uncertain ecological consequences. In Arunachal Pradesh, tribal communities fear the submergence of villages, loss of farmland, and the erasure of their way of life. Some call it progress, others a disaster in slow motion. The BBC’s Raghvendra Rao travelled to Arunachal Pradesh to understand what these projects mean for the people living by the river.
