Off-road enthusiasts know that one of the biggest challenges when driving off the grid is visibility. Seeing what’s right in front of you on a trail can be tricky, especially on uneven terrain where there are a million and one things to account for. New for 2021, the Jeep Wrangler and Gladiator lineups offer on certain models a new TrailCam front-facing camera designed specifically to improve driver visibility in difficult off-road conditions. The TrailCam option is specifically offered on the 2021 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon, the Gladiator Overland, and certain versions of the 2021 Jeep Wrangler as a stand-alone addition that requires the 8.4-inch centre touchscreen. The camera is accessed through the touchscreen. Once activated, the camera’s range can show objects within two feet of the bumper and up to 10 feet away. The TrailCam forward-facing camera is an extra set of eyes, capable of picking up rocks, logs, and sudden changes in terrain that you may not see from the driver’s position. It can also help with wheel positioning on narrow surfaces. In other words, the TrailCam removes the close proximity “blind spot” that occurs when off-roading and our attention is focused on what the trail is doing ahead, not necessarily what is right in front. The camera system is also very useful when going around angled bends where the driver is focused on power delivery. There are so many things to take into account when off-roading, the TrailCam acts as an assistant providing useful information without being distracting. The camera lens is located in the middle slot of the distinctive Jeep grille. It is positioned at the top of the slot and away from debris to remain clean even when driving through mud or dirt. Should the camera get dirty, there’s an automatic washing system that is also controlled through the Uconnect screen. “The inspiration for the forward-facing camera was our customer, the Jeep enthusiast,” said Pete Milosavlevski, Gladiator chief engineer. The inspiration for the camera system apparently came from listening to owners talk about features they would like. “We wanted to provide another innovative tool for the Jeep enthusiast to use and have a great time while they are off-roading.” With TrailCam, driving a Jeep off the beaten path is even more enjoyable.
