4K HDR quality video (some of them even in 8K 60fps), using high-end cameras and drones Diamond Harbour is a peaceful coastal town with a population of around 1,720 It retains its charm through heritage preservation, art, and outdoor recreation, while remaining closely linked to Christchurch via ferry and road. Diamond Harbour’s history is deeply tied to early European settlement and Māori heritage Quail Island (Māori name: Ōtamahua, meaning “the place where children collect sea eggs”) is a small but historically rich island in Lyttelton Harbour / Whakaraupō, just a short ferry ride from Christchurch, New Zealand. History • Māori Use: Traditionally used by Ngāi Tahu for seasonal food gathering. • Quarantine Station (1875–1925): Ships arriving in Lyttelton with disease risks offloaded passengers to the island’s quarantine barracks. • Leper Colony (1906–1925): A small group of leprosy patients were confined here until transferred to Makogai Island, Fiji. Their remains are buried on the island. • Antarctic Connection: In the early 1900s, Quail Island was used by expeditions led by Scott and Shackleton to quarantine and train dogs, ponies, and mules destined for Antarctica. • Farming: The island was also used for grazing sheep for many years. • Since the 1990s, the Ōtamahua / Quail Island Ecological Restoration Trust has led efforts to restore native plants and birdlife. Thousands of trees have been replanted, and pests (rabbits, possums, cats, hedgehogs) have been eradicated. • Birdlife is returning, including korimako (bellbirds), pīwakawaka (fantails), and seabirds. Things to Do • Walking Track: A family-friendly loop (about 2.5 hours) around the island, with stunning harbour views. • Historic Sites: Old quarantine barracks, cemetery, and leper colony sites with information boards. • Beaches: A safe sandy swimming beach near the jetty—popular for picnics. • Wildlife: Good chance of spotting native birds and learning about the restoration project.
