It is of great consequence that we with intentionality take inventory of the “the why” in everything we set our affections upon and to which we put our hands. “The Why” What is the motivation? What is the end goal? Why am I doing what I am doing? In Acts 2, we find the very consummation of the church. This is a fantastic piece of scripture. A moment that shifted history. A sound of a mighty wind came from heaven and tongues of fire sat upon them! These people became possessed by another realm another reality! The King of Glory sat up His throne in the hearts of men and we became living tabernacles. If we are not careful, we can get so caught up in the winds and fire that we forget “the why” that compelled them to show up in the first place. Jesus, in Acts 1:8, told them “He would give them power to be His witnesses”. This is a most intriguing invitation. The word ‘witness’ in this verse translates martyr! This was not an invitation to signs and wonders, wind and fire, ministry, or movements. Nothing wrong with these things when “the why” is in the proper place. However, this was an invitation for them to lay down their lives the way Jesus demonstrated in the laying down of His own life. Jesus, for the joy set before Him, endured the cross. That joy set before Him was an intimate relationship with His bride, the church, the object of His affection! He was a man born to die and He died loving you and me. “The Why” was and is “for God so loved the world He gave His son”. Love has no hooks. Love has no end game. Love loves for the sake of loving. These men showed up on the day of Pentecost ready to die for the sake of love. They showed up because they loved Jesus; nothing more nothing less. Our hearts for this song was to give language to a people who are so in love with Jesus, they will lay down their lives. Whether that means on the mission field or whether it is dying daily to our selfish ambitions and ways. This song is for the lovers, the dreamers, the prophets, the poets; a people who want to live for something greater than self; a life laid down in love for the Lord Jesus. .
