It was spoken by the Jurchen tribes of northeastern China (historically called Manchuria) during the Jin dynasty (1115–1234), which they founded. Jurchen had its own unique script, derived from Khitan and inspired in part by Chinese characters, and was used for official inscriptions and documents. While the language is now extinct, it served as the precursor to Manchu, which later became the official language of the Qing dynasty (1644–1912). Most of the surviving Jurchen texts are inscriptions or official records, and much of the language remains only partially deciphered. Jurchen People and Culture: The Jurchens were a semi-nomadic Tungusic people who lived in the forests and river valleys of what is now northeastern China. They were skilled hunters, horsemen, and archers, and maintained a tribal confederation before uniting under the Wanyan clan to establish the Jin dynasty, which ruled northern China for over a century. Jurchen society was organized around clan and military loyalty, and they absorbed many elements of Chinese governance, Buddhism, and Confucianism after conquering parts of China. At the same time, they retained their native shamanistic practices and traditional dress. Over time, especially after the fall of the Jin dynasty, the Jurchens gradually evolved into the Manchu people, who later established the Qing dynasty.
