The only bit that was fictitious is the name of the woman. In reality, her name was not Maggie May. Rod Stewart stated that the name was taken from an old Liverpudlian song on a prostitute. There is another version of the song released by The Faces when both the songwriters' Rod Stewart and Ronald David Wood, nicknamed Ronnie Wood, were in the band. Per Billboard, "Maggie May" was the No.2 song in 1971. Some other details vary slightly from Rod's real life: he met the older woman in July and not in September. And he had left school when he was15, whereas "Maggie May" is from the perspective of a boy who was contemplating to return as a student.
