The National Talent Competition for Senior High School Students kicked off on Tuesday, with almost 2,000 talented high schoolers competing for the prestigious “Golden Hands” awards. Over the course of a month, the students will show off all kinds of vocational skills, courting the attention of future employers. The top prizewinners will also win the chance to continue their professional training abroad. Opera performers shift instantly from one mask to another. These students somehow manage a cocktail mixing show, while showing off their “face-changing” skill, a distinctive part of Sichuan opera. This is the opening ceremony for the National Talent Competition for Senior High School Students. Students paint a traditional decoration on Education Minister Pan Wen-chung. Others are showing off their home-made clothes and sewing skills, or traditional “tuan jie” knots. Pan Wen-chung Education minister We have so many companies and industries that will use this opportunity to net the talent they need for their business in the future. This pre-hiring system makes it more apparent how, when students study vocational skills, so long as they can work hard to master a skill, then in fact, oftentimes, they already start to produce work opportunities, before they have even graduated. The Ministry of Education is betting on vocational education, investing in training, and encouraging colleges to collaborate with businesses, to give students work before they leave school. This year, the competition welcomes 1,909 students from 230 schools, competing for the “Golden Hands” award in five major categories. Pan Wen-chung Education minister We often say that vocational students will get their hands dirty in their work, but I say those are golden hands. I often say, after I shake their hands, I won’t wash my hands for three days. And why? We’re so immensely proud of these kids. The top two winners of the “Golden Hands” award will also be given the chance to get professional training abroad, giving them a leg-up into their future work.
