The most common argument I hear is “it’s still federally illegal”. So that's an excuse for not being a forward-thinking health professional? Or, I often hear “there’s not enough research”. Seriously? Take a look at PubMed.gov the online repository of the U.S. National Library of Medicine where you’ll find more than 15,000 citations for cannabis in peer reviewed, scientific published studies. While to date, there haven’t been large scale clinical trials or formal mechanisms for collecting data due to the stagnant federal classification, this is quickly changing. With the continued expansion of individual state legalization, many human trials are, in fact, underway at fine medical institutions across the country. And, of course, much of the game-changing research is happening outside the US, literally around the globe. Don’t these comprehensive studies count? Of course they do! So, why does this matter? Because the health care paradigm is changing and nothing is going to slow it down. In fact, a new Gallup poll shows that 60% of all American adults now say that marijuana should be legal. This is the highest level of support in nearly a half-century of polling on this question. Not only that, but support for legalization has soared in the past decade among nearly every demographic group. …including your current and potential clients. With over half the states in the United States offering legalized medical marijuana to their residents, the time is now! Time to lose the cannaphobia and help your clients and patients do the same.
