The name Auschwitz has become synonymous with death, suffering and inhumanity. At least 1.1 million people were murdered there. More than 900,000 of them were Jews. Helene Joffe grew up in a Jewish family in France and went into hiding to escape the Nazi death camps in 1943 when she was just 8 years old. She vividly remembers the impact the Holocaust had on her family. After the war she moved to South Africa and started a new life as a teacher. DW met the 90-year-old survivor.
