Fashion Portraits Without a Studio?! Learn HOW! | Take & Make Great Photography with Gavin Hoey

High end, fine art fashion photography usually needs a few essential things. A dedicated studio space, a choice of backgrounds and most obviously, a unique piece of high-end fashion for your model to wear are all on that list. Well, photographer Gavin Hoey thinks you can break all three of those rules and still create fine art fashion that portfolio worthy. The first rule Gavin breaks are limiting his frame to an A1 sized sheet of foam core over which Gavin has stretched some bright red fabric. It’s small enough that it could be set up in almost any space but, as Gavin demonstrates, to maximize the area you need to master the art of compression. Next, Gavin's team create a unique and bespoke fashion shoulder covering made from… red silicon tubing from a DIY store. Lighting it is the next challenge, and Gavin manages that with a couple of flashes for an edge lit rim lighting look. Finally, Gavin enhances the basic background by adding a big red glowing circle which mimics the curves of the neck piece. In keeping with his rule-breaking approach, the glowing red circle is actually a large red balloon lit but with a single Flashpoint XPLOR 300 Pro flash.
