My cherished desire was to visit this well maintained Museum since long ago... And I found here a NG Steam Loco of E.Rly which was used at Katwa-Burdwan,West Bengal(India) by Macleod Comany. and later by E.Rly. She recalled my childhood memories of katwa Town situated on the banks of two river Ganges at east and Ajoy at northen side.It is a Rly Junction,now all tracks are converted into broad gauge... I still hear her sweet sound of whistle and the fragrance of smoke,while we did our journey to Burdwan...or Ahmed pur.. NATIONAL RAIL MUSEUM is the focus of RAlL HERITAGE OF INDIA is a source of fascination and interest in railways for all. FEW WORDS about RAILWAYS IN INDIA....... Barely 7 yrs. after the world's first ever Train East India Company decided to set up a Railway system in India.But it took 12 more year to set up two companies in London - the East Indian railway and the Great Indian Peninsular Railway.Most Important among others to shape up the system was Lord Dalhousi The ViceRoy of India[ 1847-56].... Work began...It was the Great Indian Peninsular rail way that raced ahead and ran the first train on 16th April,1853 from Bombay to Thane carrying 400 guests.... The East Indian Railway's first Train ran between Howrah and Hoogly on 15th August 1854... Two years later,South Indian got his own Railway.The Madras Guaranteed railway company started his first Train from veyasarpaudy to Walajah Road on first July 1856... More than 40 railways were in existence in India at the time of independence. The railways were regrouped into 6 Zones in 1952 under management named Indian Railways and further into 16 Zone in 2003... Indian Railways carries 20 Millions passengers daily,which roughly equals the entire population of Australia. There are over 64,000 km of total track length,and carries about 2.3 million tons of freight daily... This RAILWAY MUSEUM was inaugurated on 1st Feb,1977,this one of its kind museum in Asia has interesting collection of HISTORY,ROMANCE,NOSTALGIA, HERITAGE and ENTERTAINMENT under one Roof. It has a indoor gallery... having working models of locomotives and cranes,models of coaches, artifacts like old railway tickets,clocks..old types of signalling equipments etc with more interesting facts.
