Mikolaj Warszynski will join forces with Vocal Artists from Pro Coro Canada for a performance of Franz Liszt’s late masterwork, Via Crucis, (The 14 Stations of the Cross), in an arrangement for piano & 8 vocalists. Please join us for this unique event taking place on Saturday March 21st at 7:30pm at the Holy Trinity Anglican Church, located at 10037 – 84 ave NW in Edmonton Strathcona. The rarely performed masterpiece ‚Via Crucis’ was composed in the late 1870s by Abbé Liszt. The work depicts in music the 14 Stations of the Cross, features reworking of Bach chorales, a capella hymns including Stabat Mater and piano solo interludes, interwoven all together creating a fascinating musical odyssey retracing the stages of Christ’s Passion: from being condemned to death to being laid in the tomb. Combining Gregorian chant, the Lutheran liturgy and the Latin, German and Aramaic languages, the Via Crucis shows real formal originality. A work of great serenity and contemplation, it is one of the last large scale works of Liszt, of particular significance because it reaches the limits of tonality, breaking the status quo of predominant tonal music of the time. This piece was so bold in its musical language, with some Stations bordering on dodecaphony, that it wasn’t even published during the composers lifetime and was first performed 50 years after Liszt’s death. Truly a testament to the composer’s mantra, who stated: „my sole ambition is to hurl my javelin into the infinite space of the future.” In addition to the Via Crucis, in the first half there will also be a solo piano performance of Liszt’s Weinen, Klagen, Sorgen, Zagen (Weeping, lamenting, worrying, fearing) Variations on Bach’s Cantata No. 12. Following the concert, there will be an art exhibit in the gallery featuring works by artists Tad Warszynski and Michał Tkaczyk, as well as a reception courtesy of the Wirth Institute for Austrian and Central European studies at the University of Alberta.
