Why Having A Company Organizational Chart is Important

I wanted to talk about something very simple, but oftentimes is overlooked and that is your organization chart. Basically the positions in your company and the hierarchy of the company. In the property management industry, your organizational chart typically starts with you. You're the Chief cook and bottle washer and then things change and you have different roles within the organization develop. Often times when you're looking to grow an organization, you have multiple people doing multiple job functions. One of the easiest ways to know where you're going and for your staff to know where you're going is to have a current organizational chart. There are different types that can be very flat linear or some where everybody is equal in caliber. But I think the biggest thing for the organizational chart is to basically show people where you're at and where we're going. A buddy of mine was mentioning to me to not put people's names in your organizational chart but instead put the job, the job title, or the job role of them. He suggested having the job description and listing when one person is doing two jobs at any particular time because that particular job role is not a full-time role. That could open the opportunity for those two roles becoming part time. You can take it a step further and put pay compensation to the job description in your organizational chart. Then, you can start to see where the organization has to grow. What kind of revenue numbers have to be hit. What kind of profit margins you'll need in order to hire more people. You could even take it further by making sure there's a key performance index or a measurement that is specific to that role. There could be several key performance index KPI's that are related to that given role. Ultimately you want to make sure that those items move the needle. You want to make sure that you're measuring the right things in the given roles so you can get the most bang for your buck. I think the biggest lesson for me is that sometimes you forget what you've already learned and it's never bad to have a refresher or reminder. Take into consideration that not everybody in an organization knows the vision of the CEO and the easy way to lay out that vision is to have a current organizational chart and have a future organization chart and maybe even a mid level organizational start. So anyway, I think it's really good for people to see the vision of where you're going and see it laid out so they know there is lateral growth in the organization. I hope this is helpful for you!
