RSPB NI Advisory: Rough Grass Margins as part of DAERA’s Environmental Farming Scheme

RSPB NI Conservation Officer Mark McCormick discuses rough grass margins on working farmland and the benefits to biodiversity and free and natural pest control by creating habitats for overwintering invertebrates. This video is one of a series of five produced by the RSPB in Northern Ireland, focusing on the options available through the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs’ Environmental Farming Scheme (EFS) to farmers and land managers as part of this programme. Rough grass margins provide shelter and nesting habitats for a number of farmland birds and mammals that nest on or near the ground in hedgerows and increases insects as an alternative food source in the summer months.
