For Tim Buckley fans who are really into Tim's "out-there" period that peaked with the "Starsailor" album, there are a few ferocious live recordings from that period that have made the rounds in the past decade or so, both on the internet and the old-fashioned physical trading way. All told, there's about three hours worth of material. The sound quality is not always that great outside of the filmed Boboquivari performance and the bits from WITF-TV's "The Show" that were included on the "My Fleeting House" DVD, but the energy always comes through, and if you're in tune with what Tim was doing at the time it's all essential listening. This track was recorded live in-studio as part of a radio performance in October 1970. Sadly the accompanying interview segment is nowhere to be found, though some of it is transcribed in Lee Underwood's book "Blue Melody: Tim Buckley Remembered" and a second song is described (that one hasn't shown up anywhere either). In some places the song is cut in half and called "Lead Me To Bed Or Leave Me To Be Eaten By Cattle". Sorting this out gets a little tricky, because Tim's live shows at the time were heavily improvised, and even recognizable songs got stretched out and became other songs, some of which would never be heard again after that one specific performance. This is the most complete version available of "Cattle", which reveals itself to be a unique version of "You Can Always Tell A City By Its Graffiti". There's also a 16-minute version that's something of a medley with "Come Here Woman", from a different performance, that is nothing like this. The sound quality here was better to start with than most of the rest of what's out there, but it was in very weird stereo, very left-leaning. Maybe it was an issue with the age of the tape. Whatever the case, I collapsed it down to mono and found it sounded a lot better. Dig how Tim's 12-string almost sounds like a vibraphone in places. If you like this and you don't own "Lorca" or "Starsailor", those albums are highly recommended, along with almost everything else Tim did (I still can't get into "Sefronia" and "Look At The Fool", but hey, that's just me). You won't find many artists who covered more ground in such a short period of time (moving from quaint folk to psychedelic and politically charged folk-rock to intensely personal acoustic folk-jazz to avant-garde otherness to raunchy sex-funk to slick record company-enforced soul in the space of eight years, with many detours along the way), or who took more chances.
