MetroTV, Taiwan's main opposition party, Kuomintang (KMT), officially inaugurated Cheng Li-wun as its new Chairperson during an oath-taking ceremony in Taipei on Saturday. "With unprecedented unity, we promise all 23 million people of Taiwan that the Kuomintang will be the party that defends democracy and freedom," Cheng said. "We will revitalise Taiwan's economic miracle and usher in a century of cross-strait peace, leading Taiwan forward!" she continued. Cheng also criticized the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), accusing it of 'gradually eroding' democratic foundations and using the judiciary as a 'tool for political oppression' against dissent. "Taiwan’s democracy is in peril," she warned. "Our security faces the constant threat of war. Taiwan’s economic miracle and its 'silicon shield' are being hollowed out and drained." Cheng Li-wun gained 51 percent of the votes, outrunning her main rival Hau Lung-bin, who received 34 percent. She will officially assume the position on November 1, becoming the second woman to be elected as party chairperson after Hung Hsiu-chu.
