Should I Accept The LVAD?

The LVAD or Left Ventricular Assist Device has become something of a modern marvel in medicine. When it was first introduced almost 20 years ago it was far from perfect. As a matter of fact when I was offered the LVAD over 5 years ago for my end stage heart failure I refused it. At the time even though technology was improving problems with device failure, clotting and bleeding put its recipients at high risk. As developments came along the LVAD was either used as a “bridge to transplant” or “destination therapy.” Both of these options have gotten much better with the introduction of the Heartmate and Heartmate 2.
