Bach was a master of counterpoint and a virtuoso organist, qualities which are displayed boldly in his many organ works. The Prelude and Fugue in C minor, BWV 546 is one of his most popular works, and it is quite a monument to his contrapuntal powers. The Prelude itself contains a double fugue periodically interrupted by the return of the opening theme, and the following Fugue develops its countersubject separately from the main subject before they are recombined, taking the listener on a journey of shifting textures dramatic for such a relatively brief fugue.
