Phantom 4 ND Filters - Why and how to use them I use PolarPro filters, DJI also makes ND filters. A number of people have asked me about what filters I use with my Phantom 4. Today I dive pretty deep into Neutral Density (ND filters) and go over what a Circular Polarizer is and why you most likely won't have a good reason to use it. Neutral Density filters are dark, color neutral pieces of glass (neutral in that they shouldn't affect the color of the image, just the exposure) that decrease the amount of light that gets to the image sensor. When shooting video a good rule for shutter speed is to try and have it be twice your framerate. This is a real challenge with shooting at 24, 30 or 60 frames a second as it means your ideas shutter speed should be 48 (50 in most camera) 60 or 120. You will find often that when shooting in auto on the Phantom your shutter rate will be 1/1000. That fast of a shutter is great if you are pulling stills from the video but doesn't look best for video where you eye is looking for a natural motion blur. To be able to shoot at these lower shutter speeds in bright light we essentially need to add sunglasses to the Phantom 4 camera (ND Filters). These screw onto the Phantom 4 in place of the clear lens protector. You just unscrew the one that came on your Phantom and replace with the correct filter. I use PolarPro filters, DJI also makes ND filters. Link to PolarPro (Not an affiliate link, I don't make anything off this) http://bit.ly/2kIpo0E In the video I mis-state the stop equivalents of the ND filters - the CORRECT stops are: ND 2 - 1 stop ND 4 - 2 stops ND 8 - 3 stops Easiest way to think of a stop is with your ISO settings. Each doubling or halving of the ISO is 1 stop ISO 100 - 200 = 1 Stop ISO 100-400 = 2 Stops ISO 100-800 = 3 Stops So with a ND filter in mind if I am trying to shoot at ISO 100 with my camera set at 1080P/60 then I want to double that frame for the shutter (the shutter should be set at 120). I can now look at my light meter at that setting and see what it is reading - if it says something like +3EV then I know I am 3 stops over and I should install an ND 8 to get the correct exposure. I also go through a little bit of video settings in this video (I will do a separate video on this). Overall I shoot a very flat picture as it allows you the most latitude in color grading in post. My general settings are style set to none with Sharpness set to 0, Contrast to -2 and Saturation to -1.
