It was a close competition, but there was a winner...two winners, actually, with each crowd having its own grand night out. Not that the gigs were identical - no two gigs are ever identical, with differences in the crowds and also in the venues. Each venue plays its own role in each show, and some of those differences can be seen in this video. The sound in Edmonton was a bit murky, muffled even, but it sounded glorious in Calgary. The lights were lower in Edmonton, which is, IMO, a good thing since these shows tend toward being over-lighted, especially Alan's mic spot, with him often being easier to see when he's away from his mic than when he's at it and all but disappears in the blaze of the nuclear glow. In Calgary, there was a blinding light at the right-side front of the stage, and it did few favours to the retinas of anyone caught in its glare. Such are the differences, but it's the similarities that most people come for, notice, and remember - the good times shared with like-minded others (even in the midst of a "battle" between two neighbouring cities), the grand nights out. Nobody curates that sort of evening better than Alan Doyle & his Beautiful Beautiful Band. A special note here too for the opener on both nights: Jake Vaadeland & the Sturgeon River Boys. I didn't get any video of them because I wasn't sure if they wanted that sort of thing, but I definitely enjoyed their unique performance both times I saw it. Always a delight to come across a n excellent opening band! Highest recommendations, catch them if you can (I recently noticed they're playing this year's Tønder Festival. Tønder is gonna love them, and of course they are gonna love Tønder!) Shows at River Cree Resort and Casino & Grey Eagle Resort & Casino, January 17 & 18,m 2025
