Have you ever had a stye? Did you know that a stye can become a more serious infection like a preseptal or facial cellulitis? Many people think that styes are not a big deal, but they can become a big deal! Any infection that close to your eye needs to be taken seriously. I am thankful for my friend Judy sharing her story so that we can learn from what happened to her. Judy had a facial cellulitis that required two weeks of intravenous IV antibiotics followed by several more weeks of oral antibiotics. She also needed to have her eyelid lanced. Judy said, “It was a nightmare, and every time I thought I was in the clear, a new stye would start.” Preseptal cellulitis is an infection of the eyelid, skin and tissues around the front of the eye. It usually is caused by spread of an infection of the face or eyelid, an infected insect or animal bite, conjunctivitis, a hordeolum (stye), or sinusitis. How does this happen? The bacteria from the stye can infect the surrounding tissues and spread until it becomes dangerous. How does it look? Typically, skin affected by cellulitis will be tender, warm, red, and painful to touch. A fever may develop. Sometimes the eyelid is so swollen that it cannot be easily opened. Cellulitis is typically treated with a course of antibiotics. It's important to get treatment ASAP, as untreated cellulitis can spread into the bloodstream and to other parts of the body, causing the infection to quickly become life-threatening. Listen as Judy shares what happened, and as we discuss prevention of future styes which I prescribed this to her via telemedicine. I met Judy on Instagram when I bought her weighted blanket for my son to help soothe him and help him sleep. After she told me about how her stye went bad, she said that she still suffered from frequent styes. I prescribed a home “Eye Hygiene Spa” that includes two types of eye masks, an eye massage and drug-free antibacterial “shampoo” and gel for her eyes. She is thrilled that this is the longest she has been without a stye in several years. As Judy and I were planning to video her story, another patient came to see me with the same problem. Styes gone bad are more common than you think. The take home message is, if you have any infection close to your eyes, get it treated by your optometrist or ophthalmologist. It is always best to see a doctor near home, but I do telemedicine consultations for patients around the world and would be happy to consult with you if you need more information about your condition, or to point you in the right direction. ========================= Follow me on Social Media!
